Micro-Planar Tweeters in IEMs: How to Read the GK Streak Design
Compare dynamic, balanced-armature, and micro-planar operating principles without assuming that driver topology alone proves cleaner treble, lower distortion, or less fatigue.
Driver labels explain construction. They do not establish that a dynamic driver has worse treble than a BA, or that a BA cannot reproduce bass. This guide separates the operating mechanisms from the measurements needed to compare finished IEMs.
Moving-coil operation
A moving-coil dynamic driver converts current into force in a magnetic gap. The coil moves a diaphragm, which changes air pressure. Diaphragm area, mass, stiffness, suspension, magnetic field, enclosure and damping all affect its response; a material name alone cannot predict bass quality or transient behavior.
Balanced-armature operation
A balanced armature moves within a magnetic system and transfers motion to a diaphragm through a drive rod. It does not produce sound by striking the diaphragm. BA units can be designed for bass, midrange or treble, and their bores and acoustic damping affect the result. Neither metallic timbre nor a fixed bass roll-off is inherent to every BA.
Distributed force and its limits
A planar magnetic driver distributes electromagnetic force through conductive traces on a diaphragm. Force distribution differs from a conventional moving coil, but depends on trace layout and magnetic geometry. Membrane tension, damping and acoustic loading still allow resonances and nonuniform motion; planar construction does not guarantee zero breakup, faster transients or lower distortion.
How acoustic outputs combine
In a hybrid, the drivers' acoustic outputs add in amplitude and phase. Electrical filters, natural roll-off, sound paths and damping can all shape that sum. A dip or peak may come from their interaction, but driver count alone cannot locate a crossover or diagnose a fault. GK Streak's exact crossover frequency, circuit and component values are not documented in the sources available for this article.
Bandwidth is not a listening verdict
A published upper frequency such as 40kHz describes a claimed bandwidth, usually without enough level and tolerance information to show the response shape. It does not prove audible air, natural decay or a Hi-Res certification. Examine the audible-band curve and the certification's actual scope separately; full-range planar and dynamic IEMs can both reproduce bass.
What would substantiate a performance comparison
An acoustic comparison needs the original traces, fixture, calibration, drive level, insertion conditions and exact units. Frequency response, distortion and channel matching are different measurements. No recoverable original GK dataset supports the former numerical accuracy or superiority claims, so those results are withdrawn rather than inferred from a driver description.
GK Streak
GK's current G3 manufacturer page identifies a dynamic design. The previous BA+DD description and 3.5kHz crossover claim in this article were unsupported and are withdrawn. KUNTEN is a single dynamic design; Streak is described in GK's product material as KUN dynamic plus a micro-planar tweeter. None of these configurations establishes a listening winner.
