GK Tuning Language: Targets, Materials and What They Can Establish

A practical explanation of house sound and acoustic design without undocumented GK lab procedures.

A house sound is shorthand for a perceived family resemblance between products. It is not a specification shared automatically by every model. A warm or vocal-forward description expresses a listening interpretation; product revision, fit and the listener can change that interpretation. This article cannot establish a single measured GK response across the lineup.

Harman / VDSF / IEF

A target curve is a reference under stated measurement and preference-study conditions. Different in-ear and over-ear targets cannot be treated as interchangeable, and preference is not the same as fidelity to a particular target. The former account of deliberate GK decibel offsets and an engineer quotation is withdrawn because no design record or attributable quotation supports it.

Moving-coil operation

A moving-coil dynamic driver converts current into force in a magnetic gap. The coil moves a diaphragm, which changes air pressure. Diaphragm area, mass, stiffness, suspension, magnetic field, enclosure and damping all affect its response; a material name alone cannot predict bass quality or transient behavior.

Cavity, vents and damping

Cavity volume, vents, nozzle geometry and damping alter the acoustic load and can move or damp resonances. Simulation and head-and-torso measurements are possible engineering tools, but there is no available record establishing that GK used FEA or a Brüel & Kjær HATS for the process previously described. Nor is there documentation for the claimed G6 damping chamber or its comparative treble result.

Bandwidth is not a listening verdict

A published upper frequency such as 40kHz describes a claimed bandwidth, usually without enough level and tolerance information to show the response shape. It does not prove audible air, natural decay or a Hi-Res certification. Examine the audible-band curve and the certification's actual scope separately; full-range planar and dynamic IEMs can both reproduce bass.

What would substantiate a performance comparison

An acoustic comparison needs the original traces, fixture, calibration, drive level, insertion conditions and exact units. Frequency response, distortion and channel matching are different measurements. No recoverable original GK dataset supports the former numerical accuracy or superiority claims, so those results are withdrawn rather than inferred from a driver description.
