Types of Headphones Explained: Over-Ear, On-Ear, Earbuds and IEMs in 2026

Understand fit, open and closed backs, in-ear sealing and wireless connections before choosing a headphone type.

GK AudioLab ·

Two separate ways to classify headphones

Over-ear, on-ear and in-ear describe placement. Open-back or closed-back describes the enclosure; wired or wireless describes connection. These labels overlap: an over-ear headphone can be open and wired, or closed and wireless. Driver diameter alone does not tell you bass quality or power requirements.

Around or against the ear

Over-ear cups surround the ear; check pad openings, clamping and glasses contact. On-ear pads rest on the outer ear, so pressure distribution matters. Open backs exchange sound with the room and are unsuitable when leakage would disturb others. Closed backs can reduce outside sound, but seal and construction determine the result. Neither guarantees a particular soundstage.

Earbuds, IEMs and TWS

Non-sealing earbuds sit near the canal entrance. IEMs use tips to form a seal; size and insertion affect comfort and tonal balance. TWS describes separate wireless earpieces, not a specific acoustic quality: some seal and others do not. Check charging, microphone and resistance ratings on the exact model.

Match the form to the task

For quiet home listening, consider whether leakage is acceptable. For recording near a microphone, assess leakage and monitor compatibility. For travel, try fit before assuming isolation. GK G1 Pro, GK KUNTEN and GK G3 are IEM pages to inspect. Use Acoustic explainers and the Current product catalog for further comparison; this taxonomy is not a performance ranking.
