IEM Burn-In: What Can Be Established
Burn-in is the practice of playing a new earphone before judging its sound.
Burn-in is the practice of playing a new earphone before judging its sound. This article has no identified controlled GK before-and-after dataset, and the earlier references to double-blind studies, a Harman archive and precise hours were not traceable. They are withdrawn. A change noticed over time may involve fit, listening level, adaptation or the transducer; listening memory alone cannot separate those causes.
Moving-coil operation
A moving-coil dynamic driver converts current into force in a magnetic gap. The coil moves a diaphragm, which changes air pressure. Diaphragm area, mass, stiffness, suspension, magnetic field, enclosure and damping all affect its response; a material name alone cannot predict bass quality or transient behavior.
Balanced-armature operation
A balanced armature moves within a magnetic system and transfers motion to a diaphragm through a drive rod. It does not produce sound by striking the diaphragm. BA units can be designed for bass, midrange or treble, and their bores and acoustic damping affect the result. Neither metallic timbre nor a fixed bass roll-off is inherent to every BA.
Check fit and comfort
Fit comes before a tuning verdict. Try the supplied sizes gently; left and right ears may need different sizes. If bass changes when you press an earpiece, reseat it and check the seal. Stop if a tip hurts or creates persistent pressure. More isolation is not always desirable when you need to hear traffic or announcements.
Normal listening is sufficient for evaluation
Use normal music at a comfortable level while checking the fit and controls. There is no established minimum burn-in duration in the evidence available here. Do not delay checking a fault until the return window closes, run extended test tones at high level, or use a volume-slider percentage as a safe sound-pressure limit. A percentage means different output on different devices.
What would substantiate a performance comparison
A meaningful before/after investigation would use the same unit, fixture, drive level and insertion conditions, repeat reseating, retain raw traces and include a control. If a difference is repeatable, its audibility still requires an appropriate listening comparison. This is a description of evidence needed, not a report that the experiment has been performed.
