USB-C describes the connector shape, not a single audio implementation. A digital USB-C earphone includes a DAC; a passive analog adapter only works where the host supports that mode. Do not infer compatibility from the plug fitting. For a phone without 3.5mm, compare a direct digital cable with a compatible DAC adapter plus an existing IEM.
USB-C / 3.5mm / 4.4mm
For a 3.5mm IEM, use a compatible digital USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter and check support for headset microphone input if calls matter. Direct USB-C IEM cables place conversion inside the cable or plug. A balanced 4.4mm cable requires a matching balanced output; it cannot plug into a 3.5mm adapter, and its presence is not evidence of an audible upgrade.
Matching the source
Source matching requires impedance, sensitivity with its reference unit, available voltage and current, output impedance and noise. A phone's USB-C port does not establish its analog output quality: with a digital adapter the adapter contains the DAC and amplifier. Start at low volume and check the exact cable, microphone and device compatibility.

Before relying on the setup, check playback, microphone recording, call routing, media buttons and volume steps with the exact device and app. A cable that plays music may not pass a microphone signal or every control. Compare total adapter-plus-IEM cost rather than treating the phone brand as a reason to buy a more expensive earphone.
Compare the total purchase cost
Set a total budget for the earphones, any required adapter, shipping and replaceable tips. A historical dollar price is not a current quote: currency, region, microphone option and seller can change the total. Compare like-for-like bundles and keep the return deadline visible while assessing comfort. A dearer driver configuration is not automatically an upgrade.
